Enhancing the permeability and abrasion resistance of concrete using colloidal nano-SiO2 oxide and spraying nanosilicon practices

Highlights • Reducing permeability and enhance the water resistance properties of concrete. • Spraying nanosilicon to surface and treatment in water-diluted nano-SiO 2  oxide. • Comparing mechanical & microstructure properties of treated and untreated concrete. • Nano-SiO 2  as an additive after preparing concrete and during curing process. Abstract By protecting concrete from penetration of aggressive chemicals,  low permeability  is one of the most important contributory factors to the concrete’s durability. In this paper the effects of nano-SiO 2  particles on concrete permeability are studied through employing the technique of spraying nanosilicon and treatment in the water-diluted nano-SiO 2  oxide. To this end, some mechanical and microstructure properties of concrete are investigated. The results show that the compression strength and the resistance of specimens to water penetration are significantly increased, whether in the mixtures cured in

Dulux Velvet Touch Autograph Collection launch

Image
The makers of Dulux Paints in India and the leading global Paints and Coatings Company, AkzoNobel, recently launched the Dulux Velvet Touch Autograph Collection. Co-curated by their brand ambassador Farhan Akhtar, it is a collection of 50 exclusive colours which have been developed at Dulux’s Global Aesthetic Center and is also the only celebrity co-curated emulsion in the paint industry today. This collection will be available in 3 pack sizes – 1 litre, 4 litre and 10 litre and will be priced at Rs 588 per litre. It’s a limited period product, available only for this season in select Dulux stores across the country. Speaking about the new launch, David Teng, General Manager, Decorative Paints, South Asia Cluster, AkzoNobel India said, “Our research showed that there is a sizeable set of consumers who need assistance with choosing the right colour for their homes. The large variety of colours makes it confusing for consumers to choose that one special colour. Hence, we though

3D Printing Houses for Utopia

Printing a house with the BigDeltaWASP 3D printer. Image: WASP Last year, the Italian 3D printer company WASP unveiled the world's largest 3D printer. It's a giant hexagonal tower 40 feet high and 20 feet wide. The size of the machine, which is called Big Delta, wasn't an attempt to get into the Guinness book of world records—it was more an attempt to get to utopia (WASP stands for "World's Advanced Saving Project"). The printer is made to build homes, in whatever far-flung places might need them, cheaply and of the material found there.  “What we are doing is an experiment [that is] somewhat ‘extreme,’” says Maurizio Andreoli, WASP's spokesman. "No one has ever printed earth and straw. With this first living module we want to prove, even to ourselves, that you can do it." They are currently proving just that. In a commune called Massa Lombarda, in Italy's province of Ravenna, they have begun building in their “Technological Vi

How PCL's PartsLab Revit plug-in aims to increase productivity

Image
Autodesk Revit has long been a key design and construction software platform. But it's not all-encompassing, and it doesn't intend to be. Other software providers and even AEC firms have iterated on the technology with helpful additions or new tools altogether as tech's role in the construction process  has grown. Such was the case for  PCL Construction . Four years ago, the contractor, already well-versed in Revit, wanted a better way to keep track of changes to a building's design during construction. Developers in the company's virtual construction solutions department explored that functionality in BIM, and the result was  PartsLab . The Revit plug-in is designed to work with the software's Parts function to track modifications to host objects in the design models during construction without changing specs established in the construction model. PCL isn't keeping the new tool to itself. Rather, the company is sharing it with other construction f
